The call for the project originated with the pending arrival of a third child to this growing family and the need for equal and separate bedrooms for each of 3 children, an expanded family kitchen room and light in the center of this existing bungalow. We added a 2 story square addition to the exact center of the rear of the modest single story bungalow, which added 3 new children's bedrooms and a bath on the upper level, a center hall cupola to bring light from the center of the roof over a new stair and down into the center of the once dark core of the house. Each of the 3 childrens' rooms was designed to be exactly equal in size and character with a 6 foot closet, generous floor space, desk wall and corner windows to provide lots of natural light and privacy. The addition first floor includes a new kitchen-family room, new laundry-mud room and lots of south light into a previously dark interior. As a bonus we included a drive-in garage in the basement, accessing the interior so Mom & Dad could "drive" directly into the house with the kids at the end of a long snowy or rainy day. The new addition massing compliments the existing Bungalow and respects the character and integrity of the modest house and the neighborhood. This is a great drive-by house. |
