This modest addition to an existing home consisted of a new entertaining living room added onto the front of the house, a new library which replaced the old living room and enlargement of several second floor guest suites.
The new living room put a new street face onto the house which previously appeared as a single story, linear ranch. By adding a perpendicular ridge line and subsequent gable face to the street, the addition creates a more welcoming face to guests while opening the house to the south, flooding the interior with natural light from the new window wall. By extending the addition forward from the original façade, a new entrance was created which now pulls guests off the street into a welcoming court where pre-existing mature crepe-myrtles shelter and welcome you to the new, oversized, custom mahogany front door. Inside, a double vestibule with heated tile floor greets you as you enter the house, delightfully leading you along circulating pathways, presenting the homeowner's beautiful paintings at each turn.
Adjacent to the new living room, the pre-existing living room was transformed into a new oak library with custom built floor to ceiling oak bookcases, new oak paneling and millwork. A new 8 foot set of oak pocket doors provides separation to the adjacent dining room optionally allowing for a free flowing floor plan configuration between rooms.
A modest existing second floor bedroom was substantially enlarged by adding a new rear dormer and modest bathroom, while new storage was created in nooks and crannies wherever unutilized rafter space could be found off hallways and the bedrooms, nearly doubling the pre-existing space. The remaining second floor spaces were re-shaped and spruced up to give the feel of an overall house renovation.
The project was built around existing ancient oak and maple trees with no harm done, leaving an end product that appears to have been in place for decades. With faux slate roof, cement shingles, aluminum clad wood windows, brick and stone base the house addition is virtually maintenance free.
